Sundog

Transforming Sundog: This classic Pearson 36 whispered in his ear

by Hugh MacMullan

Including the purchase price, Ted has spent about $48,000 on Sundog. He’s also logged about 2,200 personal manhours on “getting it right,” as well as developing invaluable relationships with folks who invariably went out of their way to help. He awards the Fullerton Above-and-Beyond Award to Dennis Johnson at Mobile Marine, Cheryl Gerfin at Defender Marine, Winston Savage at Raytheon’s Tech Support, and Paul Linehan at Jamestown Marine.

Money-Making Advertising
by Michael Facius

“I know that half of my advertising budget is wasted, but I’m not sure which half.”
—John Wanamaker, father of modern advertising.

In this tight economy it’s painful to think that half your advertising budget might be wasted. How can you squeeze the most from your advertising dollars?

Ask some pointed questions!

If you sell an aftermarket product to US or Canadian sailors who are do-it-your–selfers, here are some questions to ask the ad rep from any of the other sailing magazines.

  • How many of your readers own sailboats? 91% of Good Old Boat’s readers own at least one sailboat. It’s one thing for a magazine to boast huge circulation numbers but it’s more important to talk directly to sailboat owners. Those are the people who actually buy your products. And those are the folks you’ll reach in Good Old Boat.

  • How many of your readers do their own maintenance? 92% of our readers do minor repairs; 88% perform routine maintenance.
  • How many of your readers install new hardware and rigging on their own boats? Over 75% of our readers do. And 91% of our readers get the information they need to make improvements and upgrades from magazines, Good Old Boat in particular.

Want to know more about who reads Good Old Boat? Download our Media Kit (a small PDF file) to see data from our recent reader survey. You’ll find out where our readers live, what kind of work they’ve done on their boats, what projects they’re planning to do, the magazines they read (and the magazines they don’t read), their ages, incomes, and sailing habits.
