Dear Good Old Boat Subscriber,

Readers of Good Old Boat know that Dan Spurr has been part of our team for many years more visibly as an author and also toiling away behind the scenes as an editor for boat review and history articles. You also know Dan as the longtime editor of Practical Sailor, as a member of the Cruising World staff before that, and also as the author of a number of sailing books. He and his wife, Andra, have also been editors of Boatbuilder.

What you may not know is that Dan and family moved from the East Coast to Montana several years ago and discovered a climate completely foreign to them. In their efforts to make a few plants around their home thrive (or even grow at all) in the high and dry country, they learned quite a bit about gardening in this very different environment. And they learned that their neighbors were waging the same war. So what are a couple of folks, who have magazines in their blood, to do?

They recognized a niche and started a magazine . . . right in the middle of a terrible recession . . . but no problem! The new magazine, called Zone 4, which is a gardener's term defining their specific climate, is all about growing food and other plants in tough conditions. Since we all still need to eat and since gardening isn't a high-price hobby (anybody can get into it with very little investment and you don't need a fancy outfit!), the magazine is taking off. We may all need Victory Gardens soon! Who knows? This busy duo may have to start magazines called Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 3 . . . for the rest of us!

Dan's still into sailing in a big way and he's still part of Good Old Boat. But if you know anyone (family or friends) in these states -- Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah -- or any gardeners no matter where they live, please pass the word along about their new magazine and this website:

So now, at least as far as Dan Spurr is concerned, you know "the rest of the story"!
