Description
The Hawkfarm 28 (fractional rig) is a classic performance-oriented racer/cruiser designed by Tom Wylie (a respected San Francisco Bay Area naval architect known for fast, light boats like the Wyliecat series and various IOR/IMS designs). Introduced in the late 1970s (around 1977–1978), it was built in limited numbers (approximately 32 hulls total across variants) primarily in fiberglass by small yards or custom builders, often associated with the San Francisco Bay racing scene (e.g., Singlehanded Sailing Society events). The fractional sloop rig (with the forestay attaching below the masthead) provides better upwind efficiency, easier mainsail depowering in puffs, and a smaller headsail for tacking—making it lively and responsive in breeze while being tender initially but rewarding when powered up.
