Hawkfarm 28 (masthead rig)
Description
The Hawkfarm 28 (masthead rig) is a variant of the classic performance racer/cruiser designed by Tom Wylie (San Francisco Bay Area naval architect famous for IOR-influenced designs like the Wyliecat and various half-tonners). Introduced in the late 1970s (around 1977–1978, alongside the primary fractional version), it was offered as an alternative rig configuration on the same hull for owners preferring the simplicity of a masthead sloop—where the forestay attaches at the very top of the mast—over the fractional setup. This allows for a larger, more powerful genoa relative to the mainsail (easier to carry bigger headsails upwind), potentially better light-air reaching performance, and simpler tuning/maintenance, though it sacrifices some of the fractional rig's depowering ease and upwind pointing in stronger winds. Built in limited numbers (~32 hulls total across both rigs) in fiberglass by small/custom yards, primarily for the SF Bay racing scene (IOR 1/2-ton heritage), it's a fin keel/spade rudder boat emphasizing speed, agility, and fun club/coastal racing over heavy offshore cruising.
