Hazel 18

Hazel 18

Description

The Hazel 18 is an elegant, traditional plank-on-frame daysailer designed by Nat Benjamin and built by the renowned Gannon & Benjamin Marine Railway boatyard on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts (Benjamin is a co-proprietor of the yard). Introduced as design No. 78 (hull No. 63 at the yard), it's a relatively recent addition to their lineup of fine wooden daysailers, filling a niche between their smaller 14′ Quista (Beetle Cat-inspired) and the 21′ Bella-class sloop—aimed at simple, low-maintenance daysailing with room for a party of adults or family. The boat emphasizes ease of rigging/setup, minimal varnish (only on spars; oiled interior, painted elsewhere), and classic aesthetics with options for a gaff rig or Bermudan (Marconi) rig. It's not a mass-produced fiberglass model but a custom or semi-custom wooden build, prized for its craftsmanship and graceful lines.
