Hout Bay 30
Description
The Hout Bay 30 is a South African radius chine steel cruising cutter (with gaff or Marconi rig options) designed by naval architect Dudley Dix of Dudley Dix Yacht Design, originating in the 1990s/2000s as part of the Hout Bay series (inspired by traditional, rugged steel cruisers for southern waters). It is a plans-based design for amateur or professional builders (no single factory mass-production), constructed primarily in radius chine steel for strength, low cost, impact resistance, and ease of welding/assembly (frameless hull built over temporary frames, turned over during construction), featuring a full keel or long fin for excellent tracking and stability in rough conditions, shallow draft for versatility, heavy displacement for load-carrying (e.g., extended voyaging or family use), center cockpit or trunk cabin/flush deck variants, and a cutter rig for heavy-weather sail handling with staysail/jib options. It's praised for being one of the "biggest" 30 ft cruisers (spacious interior, good headroom, practical layout), strong seakeeping, and ability to sail out of tight spots or through most weather—examples include owner-built hulls in Russia (e.g., launched 2018 by Aleksandr Kokorin) and elsewhere, with low-tech traditional elements (e.g., galvanized rigging, simple spars). Production is scattered and limited (plans-sold; likely dozens built worldwide over decades, not tracked centrally, with some trunk cabin versions rare).
