Hinterhoeller 28 (HR-28)
Description
The HR-28 (also known as the Hinterhoeller HR-28 or Hinterhoeller 28) is a classic Canadian fiberglass pocket cruiser designed and built by George Hinterhoeller of Hinterhoeller Yachts Ltd. in St. Catharines, Ontario, starting in 1967 (with some hulls dated from 1964 prototypes or early builds through the late 1960s/early 1970s). It was constructed as a masthead sloop with solid fiberglass hull and deck, featuring a fin keel with spade rudder (later variants had minor changes like skeg rudder or bridge deck elements in transitional hulls), emphasizing sturdy build quality, good light-air performance from a generous sail plan, stability, and comfortable coastal/day cruising or occasional offshore capability for its era—often praised as a "good old boat" with excellent tracking and handling in varied conditions. Production was limited to approximately 86 boats before the line phased out as George Hinterhoeller transitioned to C&C Yachts collaborations and other designs in the late 1960s/early 1970s.
