Hullmaster 27 (HM 27)
Description
The Hullmaster 27 (also known as the HM-27) is a Canadian fiberglass cruising sloop designed by Edward S. Brewer (Ted Brewer) and Robert Wallstrom (Walstrom), emphasizing heavy displacement for stability, comfort, and offshore capability with contemporary underwater refinements for improved speed and windward performance, including a modified full keel (often described as "almost full-keeled" with a generous cutout/notch between keel and rudder to reduce wetted surface and enhance maneuverability) and skeg-mounted rudder. Built by Hullmaster Boats, Ltd. (Picton, Ontario) and later associated with DS Yachts (Schwill Yachts), production began in 1974 with a limited run of approximately 40 boats (some sources note additional hulls into the 1980s, but totals remain low), before the company faced financial difficulties leading to bankruptcy around the late 1970s/early 1980s—development costs for the 27 (cloned from the larger Hullmaster 31) contributed to the strain.
