Kaiser Gale Force (Gale Force 34)

Kaiser Gale Force (Gale Force 34)

Description

The Kaiser Gale Force (most commonly known as the Gale Force 34 or Gale Force) is an American bluewater cruising sailboat designed by John Kaiser Sr. (also known as "Rex" Kaiser, a Delaware-based lawyer-turned-boatbuilder who collaborated earlier on designs like the Allied Seawind). Built by Kaiser Yachts Associates (or Kaiser Yachts) in Wilmington, Delaware, USA, starting in 1977 (with production continuing into the 1980s–1990s for some hulls), it was purpose-built for offshore passage-making and extended voyaging, drawing inspiration from classic double-enders (e.g., Colin Archer rescue vessels) but with a squared-off transom, heavy displacement, and "overbuilt" fiberglass layup for exceptional durability and sea-kindliness in rough conditions. The design prioritizes stability (high ballast ratio, long keel with transom-hung rudder), load-carrying ability, and simple, reliable systems over speed or interior volume—often described as a "true offshore vessel" with reassuring motion, good tracking, and capability for single-handed or small-crew bluewater sailing (e.g., examples have circumnavigated or prepared for events like the Golden Globe Race). It features a cutter rig for versatile heavy-weather sail handling (with staysail/jib options), center cockpit for protection, and practical accommodations (typically 2 cabins/sleeps 4–6, functional galley/nav station, and ample tankage). Production was limited to approximately 30 hulls (a small-batch custom/semi-custom run).
