Kirby 1/4 Ton

Kirby 1/4 Ton

Description

The Kirby 1/4 Ton (also known as Kirby 1/4 T or simply Kirby 1/4 Tonner) is a Canadian fiberglass cruiser-racer designed by Bruce Kirby (the renowned Canadian naval architect famous for the Laser dinghy and many other boats). It was created in 1975 as a production-oriented Quarter Ton Cup contender under the International Offshore Rule (IOR), balancing competitive racing performance with reasonable cruising comfort. Built primarily by New Orleans Marine and Competition Marine Ltd. (with some custom cold-molded versions noted), it features a fin keel with spade rudder for responsive handling, masthead sloop rig for all-around performance, and a compact yet functional interior (berths for 4–6, galley, head). It's known for excellent light-air speed, stability, and a traditional heavy displacement profile typical of mid-1970s IOR designs (pintail stern, moderate beam). Production was limited to about 26 hulls, making it a rare classic today.
