Kirby 36

Kirby 36

Description

The Kirby 36 is a Canadian fiberglass high-performance cruiser-racer designed by Bruce Kirby (the legendary naval architect best known for the Laser dinghy and many other boats). Introduced in 1983 (developed shortly after his America's Cup 12-Meter Canada I), it was built by Scorpio Yachts (Canada) as a semi-custom or limited-production model. Only 6 hulls were completed, making it a rare classic today—emphasizing clean, fast lines without excessive IOR distortions, good all-around performance (especially upwind), and reasonable accommodations for coastal/offshore or club racing. It features a fin keel with spade rudder for responsive handling, fractional sloop rig for efficient sail control, and a reputation for being comfortable to race on (e.g., strong light-moderate wind performance but struggles downwind in some owner reports). Examples like "War Hog" (handicap ~94) were active in Michigan fleets in the mid-2000s.
