Kiwi 24
Description
The Kiwi 24 (also known as the Kiwi 24 Quarter Tonner) is a high-performance fiberglass racer designed by Ron Holland (the New Zealand-born naval architect famous for IOR successes and later Whitbread/IMOCA boats). It was developed in 1973–1975 as a stock Quarter Ton Cup contender, based on Holland's 1973 IOR 1/4 ton winner Eyghtene (pronounced "eighteen" in Kiwi accent, leading to the rating-inspired name). The first production version was the Eyghtene 24 in the UK, with the Kiwi 24 as the US/export name. Built by small yards (e.g., New Orleans Marine or Florida builders like Gary Carlin in some owner accounts), it features a fin keel (some with unique daggerboard versions for shallow draft ~18 inches), spade rudder, aggressive IOR hull (pinched ends, wide midships for form stability), and a masthead sloop rig for competitive upwind/downwind performance. It's known for speed, handling, and occasional cruising interiors in early boats, though primarily a racer (e.g., participated in 1975–1976 Quarter Ton events). Production was limited (dozens of hulls, not high-volume), with variants like modified versions ("Business Machine" at 1976 Quarter Ton Cup) or evolutions (e.g., leading to Holland 25 concepts with boards).
