Koralle Jr (Kolibri)
Description
The Koralle Jr. (also known as Kolibri in some markets, where "Kolibri" means hummingbird in German) is a compact German fiberglass (GRP) sailing dinghy built by Atlanta Bootsbau (Atlanta Boat Works) in West Germany during the 1970s. It was marketed and imported to North America (e.g., via dealers in California and New Jersey) as the Koralle Jr., while European versions were often called Kolibri. This nimble, lightweight daysailer/racing dinghy features a fractional sloop rig, centerboard/daggerboard for shallow draft versatility, and a simple open cockpit layout suited to single-handed, or 2-person use on lakes, bays, or protected coastal waters. It's praised for responsive sailing, easy handling, and fun performance in light winds—often compared to other small 1970s dinghies like the Oday Widgeon or Beetle Cat, with some owners adding trolling motors or oarlocks for versatility. Production was modest (dozens to low hundreds of hulls in the 1970s era; no exact totals tracked).
