Kraken 18

Kraken 18

Description

The Kraken 18 is a day racing trimaran sailboat designed by Australian naval architect Lock Crowther in the late 1960s/early 1970s, as a smaller evolution of his successful Bunyip 20 design. It was built in very limited numbers (likely a handful of amateur or small-shop builds, with no mass production—plans were occasionally sought in forums but are now scarce or unavailable). The design prioritized lightweight plywood/epoxy or fiberglass construction for speed and portability, with a focus on performance in sheltered waters or club racing (e.g., as a fast day boat with high initial stability and planing potential). Crowther's multihulls from this era were innovative for their time, influencing later small trimarans, but the Kraken 18 remained niche with no active class or widespread fleet today.
