Luders 16
Description
The Luders 16 (often called L-16 or L16) is a classic American one-design keelboat designed by Alfred E. "Bill" Luders Jr. (with input from his father Alfred E. Luders Sr.) in the mid-1930s. Originally commissioned as a junior racing class for the Fishers Island Yacht Club (New York), the first ~15 boats were built in 1934 by Luders Marine Construction (Stamford, Connecticut) in traditional plank-on-frame wood. A hurricane later devastated the early fleet, but interest revived post-WWII, when production shifted to innovative hot-molded plywood construction (a transitional tech bridging wood and fiberglass). Post-war, about 200+ hulls were built (total estimates vary; some sources note 200–250 across eras), with fiberglass versions by builders like Easterly Yachts (USA) in the 1960s–1970s. The design draws from contemporary International Rule sloops (e.g., Six Meters), featuring a sleek, narrow hull with long overhangs, high freeboard, distinctive cabin trunk, rounded transom, and modern lines for its time—prized for beauty, speed, nimbleness, and ease of handling. Active fleets remain in Northeast Harbor (Maine) and Chicago, where it's raced competitively (e.g., annual championships on the Great Harbor), and it's used for daysailing or light cruising—requiring minimal physical effort while offering thrilling performance in moderate winds.
