Luders 44

Luders 44

Description

The Luders 44 (also known as the Naval Academy Yawl, NA 44, or Navy Luders 44) is a classic offshore training yawl designed by American naval architect Alfred E. "Bill" Luders Jr. (of Luders Marine Construction, Stamford, Connecticut). First commissioned in 1939 for the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Maryland, the original fleet of 12 wooden-planked (Philippine mahogany) yawls was delivered around 1942–1943 for midshipmen sail training, seamanship education, and offshore experience. After ~25 years of service, they were replaced starting in 1963 with 12 fiberglass versions retaining the same exterior lines (long keel, yawl rig) but updated interiors (auxiliary engine, navigation/chart table space). These fiberglass Luders 44s served the USNA until the early 2000s, when the current Navy 44 Mark II (designed by McCurdy & Rhodes/Pedrick) took over.
