Luna 24

Luna 24

Description

The Luna 24 is a lightweight, high-performance fractional sloop designed by renowned Dutch naval architect Ericus Gerhardus van de Stadt (E. G. Van de Stadt) in the early 1980s. Built by Luna Yachts Ltd. (Canada) starting in 1981, it was developed as a competitive minitonner/quarter-tonner (IOR/Level Rating class) with a focus on speed in moderate-to-light winds, clean hull lines, a fine entry bow, and a modern fin keel with spade rudder for excellent upwind pointing and downwind planing. The design dominated North American Quarter-Ton Championships in its era (e.g., strong showings by boats like "Lunacy" in 1982), and it's known for its spirited performance, forgiving handling, and value as a club racer or fast daysailer—though the narrow beam and light displacement make it tender in heavy air (needs active crew work or reefing). Production was modest (likely dozens of hulls), with some "turbo" versions modified with bulb keels/struts for better reaching stability.
