Malibu Outrigger

Malibu Outrigger

Description

The Malibu Outrigger is a classic beach-launched tacking outrigger sailing canoe from the 1950s California surf culture, designed by Warren Seaman (inspired by Hawaiian outrigger canoes he saw during WWII service in Maui). It became hugely popular at the Malibu Yacht Club (a beachside club on the sand in Malibu, CA), where members built dozens from plans published in Popular Mechanics (June 1958 issue) and other sources. The boat is a proa-style outrigger (single ama on one side) with a single daggerboard in the main hull, allowing safe launch/landing through moderate surf and tacking conventionally (unlike traditional Pacific proas that shunted). It inspired major multihull developments, including Hobie Alter's early Hobie Cat designs after he observed them at the beach. Modern reproductions (e.g., Tim Niemier's composite 18-foot version) keep the spirit alive as a fun, fast, lightweight sailer for beach, lake, or coastal use—paddlable, rowable, or sailed.
