Description
The Malo 116 (also written as Malö 116) is a premium Swedish cruiser built by Malö Yachts (Kungsviken, Sweden, on the island of Orust) from around 1980 to the early 1990s. It's a semi-custom, high-quality fiberglass yacht (GRP hull, often with teak decks and interior) designed for safe, comfortable long-distance cruising in northern climates—emphasizing excellent balance, a broad stern for good reaching/downwind performance, and a high freeboard bow for dry sailing. The boat was expensive new (aimed at discerning owners) and built in small numbers (likely dozens total), making surviving examples rare and well-maintained (often refitted with modern systems like hydraulic in-mast furling, electric winches, and updated engines). It's praised for Orust quality (robust construction, beautiful woodwork), seaworthiness (can sail anywhere in the world), and a spacious, practical layout (3-cabin versions common with owner's cabin forward or aft, large saloon, good storage).
