Mariner 40 Ketch
Description
The Mariner 40 (also known as Mariner 40 (Garden)) is a heavy-displacement, full-keel bluewater ketch designed by William Garden (with construction oversight by Clair Oberly) and built by Far East Yacht Builders Inc. (Ta Yang Yacht Building Co. Ltd., Taiwan) starting with wooden versions in 1965, transitioning to fiberglass hulls with wood decks and superstructure in 1970. Production was limited (likely in the low hundreds across variants, including some raised pilothouse "Mistri" versions), reflecting the era's semi-custom approach for offshore cruising yachts. It features robust fiberglass construction, a traditional clipper bow, a masthead ketch rig for balanced short-handed sail handling in heavy weather, excellent stability from its encapsulated lead keel, and a spacious, comfortable interior suited for extended passages or liveaboard use—prized for its seaworthiness, dry ride, and proven capability in rough conditions (many examples have logged significant ocean miles).
