Mason 53 Ketch
Description
The Mason 53 Ketch is a large, heavy-displacement bluewater cruiser designed by Al Mason (naval architect for Pacific Asian Enterprises/PAE) and built by Ta Shing Yacht Building Co. Ltd. (Taiwan) in the mid-to-late 1980s, with a very limited production run (likely in the low single digits to low teens due to the semi-custom, high-end nature of the yard and the era's market). It features exceptionally robust fiberglass construction (hand-laid to Lloyd's +100A1 specifications with full-length longitudinal stringers and bonded bulkheads), a long encapsulated keel for outstanding directional stability and grounding forgiveness, a powerful masthead ketch rig for balanced short-handed sail handling in heavy weather, and a spacious, luxurious teak interior suited for extended offshore cruising or liveaboard use—prized for its seaworthiness, dry ride, reassuring stability in all conditions, and timeless lines that evoke a much larger classic yacht.
