Mercer 44 Yawl

Mercer 44 Yawl

Description

The Mercer 44 Yawl is a rare and highly regarded variant of the classic Mercer 44, a bluewater cruiser designed by William H. Tripp Jr. (one of his most celebrated designs) and built by Mercer Marine (a small custom yard in New Jersey, USA) in the early to mid-1960s. While the standard Mercer 44 was produced as a masthead sloop, a few hulls were completed as yawls (adding a small mizzen mast aft of the cockpit), likely for improved balance, easier sail handling in heavy weather, and the classic aesthetic favored by some owners. Only a handful of yawl-rigged examples exist (total Mercer 44 production was very low, estimated at 5–10 hulls overall, with yawls being even scarcer).
