Michalak Caroline
Description
The Michalak Caroline (often simply called Caroline) is an 18-foot (5.49 m) by 6-foot (1.83 m) plywood pocket cruiser designed by Jim Michalak, blending elements of his Philsboat and Frolic2 designs for a bit more cabin room while keeping the simple, tape-and-glue plywood/epoxy construction (requiring about 10–12 sheets of plywood, plus epoxy and lumber). It features a cat-ketch rig with balanced lug sails (unstayed masts for easy setup), leeboards for lateral resistance and shallow draft, positive flotation, and a small cabin with berths for 2–4 people—ideal for short coastal cruises, lake camping, or protected-water exploring. The boat is lightweight (~750 lb / 340 kg empty), trailerable, and praised for its stability, rowing ability (as primary propulsion), and forgiving nature in moderate conditions.
