Multichine 23
Description
The Multichine 23 is a compact, amateur-friendly cruising sailboat designed by Roberto Barros (B&G Yacht Design / Roberto Barros Yacht Design, Brazil). Introduced in the late 1970s, it was a breakthrough for homebuilders: one of the early successful multi-chine plywood designs (typically 3–4 chines for a rounded hull approximation that's easier to plank than true round-bilge but stronger/lighter than simple hard-chine). The method uses plywood panels joined with epoxy/fiberglass tape (stitch-and-glue influenced), making it accessible for backyard or small-shop construction while delivering a seaworthy, stable cruiser with good accommodations for its size. It's praised for strength, efficiency, and versatility—coastal cruising, short offshore passages, or even extended voyages with large tankage (water/diesel). Many hulls were built in Brazil (e.g., by Franzen Shipyard) and elsewhere, with examples still sailing today (e.g., videos of 2006 builds). It's a practical pocket cruiser: comfortable, stable, and capable "going anywhere" per the designer, with a focus on amateur buildability over extreme performance.
