Murray 33

Murray 33

Description

The Murray 33 (also known as the Brewer Murray 33 or Ted Brewer Murray 33) is a robust, bluewater-oriented auxiliary sloop or cutter designed by renowned naval architect Ted Brewer (Brewer Design #122). Introduced in the 1970s–1980s, it's specifically engineered for steel construction (double chine hull for simpler building), combining the strength and durability of steel with good performance in a roomy, conventional layout. The design emphasizes long-range cruising capability, with generous stowage, up to 7 berths (though typically 4–6 in practical use), and a motion comfort ratio around 29 (excellent for offshore passages, low roll acceleration for reduced seasickness). It's popular among steel-boat enthusiasts (especially in Canada and the US East Coast/Great Lakes regions), with examples built by amateurs or small yards. Hulls are hard chine for ease of plating, fin keel with skeg rudder for protection and tracking, and a masthead rig that's easily handled short-handed or single-handed. Owners praise the "very well done hull," plenty of headroom (full 6'+), generous tanks, and proven seaworthiness—some have logged 20,000+ NM. It's not a mass-production boat (limited numbers built), so examples are rare but hold value when well-maintained.
