Mustang 22 (Plas-Trend 22)
Description
The Mustang 22 (also known as the Plas-Trend 22, PT-22, or Mustang 22) is a compact, trailerable American sailboat designed by Martin Bludworth (a Texas-based sailmaker, designer, and avid racer) as a Midget Ocean Racing Club (MORC) racer and daysailer/racer. First built in 1969 by Plas-Trend Corporation (Ft. Worth, Texas; later Composite Technologies/Island Yacht Corp), production ran through the early 1970s with only about 40 hulls made—making it a rare, cult-classic fiberglass boat today. It features an unusual bulb keel with retractable centerboard (stored inside the keel for shallow draft versatility and added stability), a spade rudder, and clean lines reminiscent of the Cal 20 (similar era and MORC focus). The fractional sloop rig provides lively performance in light-to-moderate winds, with good planing potential downwind and responsive handling.
