Nautor Swan 40 (S&S)
Description
The Nautor Swan 40 (often specified as Swan 40 (S&S) to distinguish from the later 1990s Frers-designed Swan 40) is an iconic Finnish performance cruiser-racer built by Nautor Oy (Nautor Swan) in Jakobstad (Pietarsaari), Finland, designed by the legendary American firm Sparkman & Stephens (design #2025). Production was limited to 1970–1972, with exactly 51 hulls constructed in solid fiberglass (GRP) with lead ballast keel (fin with skeg-hung rudder for balanced handling and protection; a centerboard version was also offered as S&S #2025.1). It features a classic masthead sloop rig, high build quality typical of early Swans (with options for taller rig), comfortable yet functional teak interior (typically 2 cabins with 6 berths, galley, heads, and good storage), responsive sailing characteristics from its IOR-influenced lines, excellent stability, and a reputation as a timeless, seaworthy cruiser-racer—proven in offshore events and still highly prized today for its pedigree, durability, and classic appeal among enthusiasts.
