Nautor Swan 50 Ketch
Description
The Nautor Swan 50 Ketch (also known as the Nautor 50, Swan 50 MS, or Swan 50 Motorsailer) is a premium Finnish bluewater motorsailer built by Nautor Oy (Nautor Swan) in Jakobstad (Pietarsaari), Finland, designed by the legendary American firm Sparkman & Stephens. Production was short-lived from 1976 to 1978, with only 9 hulls constructed in solid fiberglass (GRP) featuring a fin keel with skeg-hung rudder for stability, protection, and balanced handling under both sail and power—typical of the era's heavy-displacement motorsailers optimized for comfortable, reliable long-distance cruising with strong auxiliary capability. It features a masthead ketch rig for easy sail management (especially in heavy weather or when motorsailing), luxurious teak interior (typically 2-3 cabins with 6-8 berths, spacious saloon/galley/heads, and excellent tankage/storage for extended voyages), center cockpit layout in many examples for enhanced protection and visibility, exceptional Scandinavian craftsmanship, seaworthiness, and a reputation as a robust, comfortable passagemaker (with molds later sold to Siltala Yachts for the related Nauticat 52 variant)—distinct from the modern high-performance ClubSwan 50 one-design racer.
