Navy 44 Mk I
Description
The Navy 44 Mk I (also known as Navy 44 (M&R)) is a purpose-built fiberglass sail training sloop designed by McCurdy & Rhodes for the United States Naval Academy (USNA) to provide midshipmen with safe, durable offshore training and racing experience. Built by Tillotson-Pearson (TPI Composites) in Warren, Rhode Island, from 1985 to 1991 (with deliveries starting around 1987), exactly 20 hulls were produced to withstand intensive use (often 200+ days/year) with robust construction emphasizing seaworthiness, low maintenance, and balanced performance as a cruiser-racer—featuring a fin keel with skeg-hung rudder for protection and tracking, masthead sloop rig, functional interior layout (typically accommodating 6–8 in pilot berths, settees, galley, head, and nav station), proven offshore capability (e.g., Bermuda races), and a reputation for toughness and reliability in academy service before gradual decommissioning.
