New York 36
Description
The New York 36 (also known as NY 36 or Schock NY 36) is an American one-design racer-cruiser designed by William E. Cook (naval architect) for the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) as a high-performance club boat that could also serve for family cruising. Built by W. D. Schock Corp. (USA) starting in 1980, it was produced in limited numbers (likely in the dozens to low hundreds, based on its one-design focus and historical mentions; it raced actively as a class on NYYC cruises through the 1980s, with some sold to non-members, especially on the West Coast). It features a fractional rigged sloop (though often sailed with masthead configurations in practice), fin keel with spade rudder for responsive handling, lightweight fiberglass (GRP) construction emphasizing speed under IOR rules while offering comfortable accommodations (typically 2 cabins with 6 berths, galley, heads, and good storage for weekend/extended cruising), and a reputation as a competitive, fun boat in moderate winds (strong in 4–10 knots flat water, less ideal in chop/light air)—still appreciated today for one-design or PHRF club racing with a full sail inventory.
