Newfoundland Trap Skiff
Description
The Newfoundland sailing skiff design originates from traditional Newfoundland working boats (double-ended, lapstrake-planked skiffs used for setting cod traps, rowing, and occasional sailing in the early-mid 20th century), adapted for modern recreational use by designers like Walter J. Simmons of Duck Trap Woodworking (Maine-based, but plans widely distributed and built nationwide, including California owners/builders). California has a strong wooden boat community (e.g., San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park builds/repairs similar small craft, and enthusiasts build from plans), so examples of this skiff exist there via owner-builds, classes, or small shops—often in plywood/epoxy lapstrake for ease, with a ketch sprit rig (balanced lug foresail + small mizzen) for simplicity, low unstayed masts, easy reefing, and lively performance (fast off-wind, good rowing backup). No mass production; it's plans-based (from Duck Trap or similar), with hundreds built globally by amateurs/professionals.
