Newport 20
Description
The Newport 20 is a compact, trailerable American pocket cruiser/daysailer designed by renowned naval architect Gary Mull (known for performance-oriented designs like the Santa Cruz 27 series). Built by Lindsey Plastics / Capital Yachts Inc. (USA) from 1968 onward (out of production now, with production likely tapering in the 1970s–1980s), it was constructed in fiberglass (GRP) featuring a masthead sloop rig, swing keel (centerboard) with transom-hung rudder for shallow draft, trailering, and beaching versatility. A swing keel variant was sometimes marketed as the Lindsey Mighty Mite. Quantities built are not precisely documented but moderate (hundreds estimated, common in used US markets especially West Coast/Great Lakes), emphasizing affordability, lightweight performance, and fun family sailing on lakes, bays, or protected coastal waters—nimble in moderate winds with a surprisingly roomy cockpit/cuddy for 2–4 people, basic accommodations (V-berth forward, settees convertible to berths, small storage), and outboard auxiliary.
