Newport 27 Mk III
Description
The Newport 27 Mk III (also designated Newport 27-3 or Newport 27 Mark III) is a later-evolution American fiberglass cruiser-racer built by Capital Yachts Inc. in Harbor City, California, designed by the Canadian firm C&C Design (Cuthbertson & Cassian). Introduced in 1975 (as an update to the original 1971 Newport 27-1 and subsequent Mark II variants), it was part of a production run spanning the mid-1970s to mid-1980s (with some hulls into the late 1980s, e.g., 1986–1987 examples noted in listings/videos). Quantities built across all Newport 27 variants were in the hundreds, with the Mk III representing a refined version emphasizing improved performance and interior usability—featuring a masthead sloop rig, fin keel with spade rudder (deeper draft than early models for better upwind ability), solid GRP construction, and a spacious, stand-up interior (nearly 6 ft headroom, 4–6 berths including V-forward, settees, quarter berth, galley, heads, and good storage/tankage for coastal cruising).
