Newport 28 Short Rig
Description
The Newport 28 Short Rig (also referred to as the short/standard rig in some contexts for the Newport 28 series) is the base or lower-mast configuration of the popular American fiberglass cruiser-racer built by Capital Yachts Inc. in Harbor City, California, designed by C&C Design (Cuthbertson & Cassian). This rig was the default or early option during production (1974–1981 for the original Newport 28, with evolutions into the 1980s for Mk II/28-2 variants), emphasizing easier bridge clearance (air draft under ~40 ft), slightly reduced power in very light winds, and simpler handling for coastal/family cruising—while retaining the boat's core strengths: spacious interior (stand-up headroom ~6 ft, 4–6 berths, galley/heads, quarter berth), fin keel with spade rudder, solid GRP construction, inboard auxiliary (often diesel in later builds), and forgiving stability (ballast/displacement ~46%) for club racing or weekend trips. It's a practical choice in areas with height restrictions or for owners preferring moderate performance over maximum light-air speed (tall rig variants offered more sail area/power).
