Newport 30

Newport 30

Description

The Newport 30 is a classic American fiberglass cruiser-racer built by Capital Yachts Inc. (initially under Lindsey Plastics branding) in Harbor City, California, designed by renowned naval architect Gary Mull. Production began in 1968 (as the Newport 30-1) and continued through multiple evolutions (e.g., Phase II/Newport 30-2 from 1974, Mk III/Newport 30-3 from 1984) into the mid-1980s, with hundreds of hulls built across variants (exact total not precisely documented but considered a successful, long-running model in the Capital/Newport lineup). It features a masthead sloop rig, fin keel with spade rudder for balanced handling and good upwind performance, solid GRP construction emphasizing spacious interior volume for its size (stand-up headroom ~6 ft, 4–6 berths including V-forward, settees, quarter berth, galley, heads, and decent storage/tankage), inboard auxiliary (often Universal Atomic 4 gas or diesel in later models), and a reputation as a forgiving, stable, affordable family coastal cruiser with competitive club racing potential—roomy, easy to sail, and well-suited for weekend/overnight trips or light offshore use, though not a heavy bluewater boat (Capsize Screening ~2.0–2.1 range).
