Newport 30 Mk III
Description
The Newport 30 Mk III (also known as Newport 30-3 or Newport 30 Mark III) is a refined American fiberglass cruiser built by Capital Yachts Inc. in Harbor City, California, designed by Gary Mull. Introduced in 1984 as an evolution of the earlier Newport 30 series (starting 1968), it shifted toward more cruising-oriented features with production continuing into the late 1980s (quantities not precisely documented but part of the hundreds built across Newport 30 variants). It emphasizes comfort and practicality: mast moved aft for better balance, wheel steering (standard vs. tiller on earlier models), diesel auxiliary (e.g., Universal M018 or similar, often 14–18 hp), longer waterline for improved speed/hull form, increased tankage (fuel ~30 gal, water ~70 gal), and a spacious interior (stand-up headroom ~6 ft, 4–6 berths including V-forward, settees, quarter berth, galley, heads). It's known as a forgiving, stable family coastal cruiser with good light-to-moderate air performance, solid build quality for its price point, and decent club racing ability (PHRF ~180–186 average), though not heavy bluewater-oriented—many examples remain actively sailed with refits.
