Niagara 26
Description
The Niagara 26 is a Canadian fiberglass racer-cruiser designed by George Hinterhoeller (an Austrian-born immigrant who founded Hinterhoeller Yachts after leaving C&C Yachts). Built primarily by Hinterhoeller Yachts Ltd. in St. Catharines, Ontario, starting in 1975 (with the first 69 hulls produced there), production later transitioned to licensed builders Goman Boat Ltd. (Midland, Ontario) and Halman Manufacturing Co. (Beamsville, Ontario) through the 1980s. A total of approximately 170 hulls were constructed, making it a reasonably common classic in Canadian and Great Lakes waters. It features a fractional sloop rig (with adjustable backstay, cunningham, outhaul, and controls led aft for easy shorthanded sailing), fin keel with spade rudder for responsive handling and good upwind performance, solid GRP construction (often praised for clean lines and durability), and a surprisingly spacious interior for its size (typically 4–5 berths with V-forward, settees, small galley/heads, and standing headroom). It's renowned as a fast, fun, and competitive boat (excellent in moderate winds, with a lively feel and strong SA/D ratio for its era), suitable for club racing or coastal cruising—still popular among owners for its balance, value, and classic appeal.
