NONSUCH 33

NONSUCH 33

Description

The Nonsuch 33 is a premium Canadian cat-rigged cruiser built by Hinterhoeller Yachts Ltd. in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, designed by Mark Ellis (a specialist in unstayed cat rigs for simplicity, power, and shorthanded ease). Production ran from 1988 to the early 1990s (with some later custom builds noted, e.g., a 2009 example by Wiggers Custom Yachts), during which 67 hulls were constructed in fiberglass (GRP) with balsa-cored decks for lightweight strength and durability. It features an unstayed cat rig (single large mainsail on a wishbone boom for effortless reefing, no headsails/jib, excellent twist control, and minimal lines/hardware), fin keel with spade rudder for balanced performance and good upwind ability, and an exceptionally spacious, well-finished teak interior (typically 2 cabins with 6 berths, generous galley, enclosed head, nav station, and ample tankage/storage for extended coastal or offshore cruising). It's renowned for simplicity (one sail, self-tacking-like handling), stability, seaworthiness (strong in moderate/strong winds with comfortable motion), and fun sailing—often called a "single-hander's dream" with proven bluewater credentials among owners, though the cat rig requires good technique in very light air or heavy gusts.
