New York Yacht Club 48
Description
The New York Yacht Club 48 (often abbreviated NYYC 48 or New York 48) is a rare, club-commissioned American bluewater cruiser-racer from the mid-1970s, essentially a customized variant of the Swan 47 (designed by Sparkman & Stephens, S&S design #2201). In 1976, the New York Yacht Club sought a new one-design offshore class (originally aiming for 48–55 ft LOA, rating well under IOR, with shallow draft and proper sailing qualities—not a motorsailer). After a design competition with 18 entries, the club selected a modified Swan 47-2 centerboard (CB) version as the winner (out-of-competition), shortening the hull slightly for economy while retaining interior, rig, and deck layout. Built by Nautor Oy (Nautor Swan) in Finland starting in 1976 (hull numbers 60+ from the Swan 47 series), only about 10 hulls formed the initial nucleus (some sources note up to 70 total Swan 47 variants, but NYYC-specific CB adaptations were limited to ~10–20). It emphasizes robust fiberglass (GRP) construction, a centerboard keel for variable draft (shallower access while maintaining deep-draft performance), masthead sloop rig for balanced handling, luxurious teak interior (typically 2–3 cabins with 6–8 berths, spacious saloon/galley/heads, and ample tankage for extended/liveaboard cruising), and proven seaworthiness (strong stability, comfortable motion, and offshore capability in moderate/strong winds).
