New York Yacht Club 50
Description
The New York Yacht Club 50 (often abbreviated NY 50 or New York 50) is a historic American gaff-rigged sloop class commissioned by the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) in 1912–1913 as a one-design racing yacht for members. Designed by legendary American naval architect Nathanael Greene Herreshoff (N.G. Herreshoff, "Captain Nat"), it was built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, Rhode Island, with exactly 9 hulls produced (all launched in 1913) to promote fair, competitive racing while offering elegant lines and seaworthy qualities for the era's Sound and offshore events. The class emphasized uniformity (strict one-design rules for hull, rig, and sail plan), high performance (fast in moderate/heavy winds with powerful gaff rig), and classic beauty (long overhangs, low freeboard, sheer, and tumblehome). Only one survives today: Spartan (hull #712, originally owned by J. P. Morgan Jr. or similar elite members; restored and raced in classic regattas like Voiles de Saint-Tropez and Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge). It's renowned as a pinnacle of Herreshoff craftsmanship—timeless, fast, and a symbol of early 20th-century American yachting heritage (pre-fiberglass, pre-IOR era).
