Ohlson 36
Description
The Ohlson 36 is a classic Swedish wooden cruiser-racer designed by Einar Ohlson (of the renowned Ohlson brothers, prolific Swedish naval architects in the mid-20th century). Built by Ohlson Brothers (Bröderna Ohlson) in Gothenburg/Västra Frölunda, Sweden, from 1958 to 1966, with production focused on high-quality mahogany planking on laminated oak frames (some later GRP versions or hulls from Tyler Boat Co. in the UK for export). It was also marketed in the US by George O'Day Associates as the Ohlson 35 (not to be confused with later fiberglass models). An updated Mk II version appeared in 1965 with refinements (e.g., minor hull/rig tweaks for better performance). Available in sloop and yawl rigs (yawl adds a small mizzen for balance, easier shorthanded sailing, and heavy-weather versatility). The design emphasizes seaworthiness, comfort, and speed—stable with a full keel (or fin with skeg), generous sail plan for light-air excellence, and a practical interior (typically 4–6 berths with V-forward, settees, galley, heads, and storage for coastal/offshore cruising). It's celebrated as "the racing machine" that built the Ohlson international reputation—proven in offshore events, with timeless beauty, durable construction, and enduring appeal in classic yacht circles (many restored examples still race/cruise today).
