Nautor Swan 36 - 1 (S&S)
Description
The Nautor Swan 36 (commonly called Swan 36 or Swan 36 (S&S)) is the groundbreaking inaugural model from Finnish builder Nautor Oy (Nautor Swan) in Jakobstad (Pietarsaari), Finland, designed by the legendary American firm Sparkman & Stephens (design #1710). Production ran from 1967 to 1970 (with some sources extending to 1971), during which 90 hulls were built in solid fiberglass (GRP) featuring a fin keel with skeg-hung rudder for balanced handling, protection, and excellent tracking—originally developed as a competitive One Ton Cup racer under RORC/IOR rules but quickly establishing itself as a versatile cruiser-racer with timeless elegance (long overhangs, low freeboard, sheer, and tumblehome). It features a masthead sloop rig (some later modified to cutter for shorthanded/offshore use), high-quality teak interior (typically 2 cabins with 5–6 berths, galley, heads, and good storage), responsive performance, strong stability (high ballast ratio), and a legendary reputation as a durable, seaworthy thoroughbred—proven in major offshore races (e.g., Fastnet class wins) and still actively sailed/raced today as a classic with enduring appeal and value.
