Acorn Dinghy 10'2" (Puffin)
Description
The Acorn Dinghy 10'2", often referred to as the "Puffin" in Iain Oughtred's catalog, is a compact, lightweight, and versatile small boat designed for rowing and sailing. It’s a traditional glued-lapstrake plywood dinghy inspired by classic Whitehall-style boats, optimized for solo use or light tandem rowing with optional sailing capability. Compared to the Acorn Skiff 11'9", the Puffin is shorter, slightly wider relative to its length, and designed with a fuller transom, making it a better sailor but slightly less optimized for rowing speed. Its compact size and low weight make it ideal for car-topping, beach launching, and use in sheltered waters like lakes, rivers, or calm coastal areas. The Puffin is part of Oughtred’s family of Acorn designs, evolving from his earlier 7'10" dinghy and sitting below the 11'9" Acorn Skiff in size. It’s praised for its balance of aesthetics, ease of construction, and performance, appealing to amateur builders with basic to intermediate skills. No lofting is required, simplifying the build process.
