Eel Canoe Yawl

Eel Canoe Yawl

Description

The Eel Canoe Yawl is an 18'6" classic pocket cruiser designed by legendary naval architect William Garden in the 1960s, inspired by George Holmes' original 1895 Eel—a pioneering canoe yawl from England's Humber Yawl Club era. Garden's version refines the concept into a lighter, more trailerable form while retaining the double-ended hull, shoal draft, and minimalist ethos of early canoe yawls: engineless coastal cruising via sail and oars, emphasizing self-reliance and exploration of estuaries and beaches. It's a rugged day-sailor or overnight micro-cruiser for 2–4, with a tiny cuddy cabin for shelter. Over 50 have been built, mostly by amateurs, earning praise for its elegant lines, responsive handling, and romantic appeal—often called a "floating teacup" that punches above its weight in seaworthiness.
