Glen-L Steelaway
Description
The Glen-L Steelaway is a 35-foot steel coastal cruising sailboat designed by Glen L. Witt and offered through Glen-L Marine Designs since the 1970s as Plan #254. Built by amateur welders using simple flat-panel steel construction with 1/8 plate, dozens to low hundreds have been constructed worldwide, making it popular among DIY builders seeking an affordable, rugged cruiser. The design features welded steel hull construction with full-length internal ballast keel containing 7,000 lbs of concrete and scrap steel, while the cabin and interior use lumber and plywood with fiberglass sheathing. Key features include sleeping for 5 in three cabins, 6'3 to 6'5 headroom, 120-gallon fuel and 170-gallon water capacity, and a masthead cutter rig with bowsprit totaling 747 sq ft of sail area, powered by a recommended 30-35 hp inboard diesel engine.
