Penny Fee

Penny Fee

Description

The Penny Fee is a compact, versatile wooden dinghy designed by renowned Scottish naval architect Iain Oughtred in the early 2000s. Inspired by traditional British wherries and fishing boats, it's a reinterpretation optimized for modern glued-lapstrake (clinker) plywood construction, making it accessible for amateur builders. At just under 16 feet, it's Iain Oughtred's largest dinghy design among his half-dozen small craft, emphasizing efficient rowing for distance, stable sailing in varied conditions, and capacity for picnics or light loads. It's not a blue water cruiser but excels as a tender, day-sailer, or explorer for sheltered waters, coastal hops, or as a yacht auxiliary. With over a hundred built worldwide, it's praised for its elegant lines, seaworthiness, and "soulful" handling—owners often describe it as feeling like a "step back in time" while being practical for today.
