Sadler 26

Sadler 26

Description

The Sadler 26 is a British family cruiser-racer sailboat designed by David Sadler (with some sources crediting input from his son Martin Sadler in the context of the "unsinkable" construction inspired by the 1979 Fastnet Race lessons), built by Sadler Yachts in Poole, UK; introduced in 1981 as an enlarged and updated successor to the Sadler 25, it was produced until around 1988 (with some owner-completed kit boats post-administration), with approximately 200 units constructed. The fiberglass monohull features innovative "unsinkable" double-skinned construction with polyurethane foam filling between the outer hull and inner molded lining (allowing it to remain stable and buoyant even when flooded, as demonstrated in magazine tests), masthead sloop rig, transom-hung rudder, and keel options including deep fin (standard), bilge keels (most common), shallow fin, tandem (Collins), or drop keel for versatility in drying out or shallow waters; the practical interior accommodates 4-5 berths (V-berth forward, saloon settees/convertibles, quarter berth), compact galley, enclosed head, and good headroom, with a deep, secure cockpit and high coamings for safety; it offers a high ballast ratio (~41-42%) for stiffness and upwind performance, solid seaworthiness, responsive handling, and a reputation as a "little boat with big attitude"—capable, stiff, and fun in varied conditions (though not the fastest in very light air due to moderate sail area/displacement).
