Soverel 33 (1983)

Soverel 33 (1983)

Description

The Soverel 33 (1983) was designed by Mark Soverel as a revolutionary Ultra Light Displacement Boat (ULDB) that earned legendary status as "the sailing equivalent of a bored-out Corvette" and became a racing circuit demon in the early 1980s. Built from 1983 to 1990 by multiple builders including Soverel Marine (first 69 boats with Klegecell hull/deck construction), Tartan Marine, and Pacific Boat Works, with approximately 90 boats total produced using 2 sets of molds, this fractional sloop represents Mark Soverel's vision of creating a fast, light vessel that would excel in one-design fleet racing while providing couples or families with "camper style" amenities. The boat features ultralight 5,800-pound displacement with 2,800 pounds of ballast (48.28% ballast ratio), creating an exceptional 26.75 sail area to displacement ratio that enables planing performance and speeds well above its 7.39-knot theoretical hull speed, while the fin keel and spade rudder configuration with 11-foot beam provides the stability and control needed for high-performance sailing that made this design a standout performer in IOR, MORC, and Admiral's Cup competition.
