Valgerda

Valgerda

Description

The Valgerda is an 18-foot 7-inch traditional Norwegian-inspired sailboat designed by John Atkin and William Atkin of Atkin & Co. in the early 1950s. This unique design originated when the Atkins spotted an imported Hardangersjekte (traditional Norwegian fishing boat) beside a New York highway and were captivated by its evolved hull form. John Atkin took off the lines from a sister hull they later found, adapting the traditional design for recreational use. Following Pat Atkin's passing in May 2022, all Atkin & Co. boat plans are now maintained and sold through the Mystic Seaport Museum Ships Plans Store. The Valgerda represents the Atkin tradition of creating practical, well-proven wooden boat designs that make excellent projects for amateur builders.
