Vitesse 40 Yawl
Description
The Vitesse Yawl (also known as the Vitesse 40) is the original name for what later became the iconic Block Island 40. It is a classic keel/centerboard yawl designed by William H. "Bill" Tripp Jr. in 1956–1957 as one of the earliest successful fiberglass production yachts of its size. The design was initially commissioned for a Dutch builder (Van Breems International) under the Vitesse name, but production shifted to the U.S. when American Boat Building Corporation (Beetle Boat Division) acquired the rights and molds. Early boats were built as the Vitesse 40 yawl; the name was later changed to Block Island 40 with minor modifications (including a higher-aspect mainsail in some versions). A total of around 36–40 hulls were produced across the early Vitesse/Block Island 40 run (Beetle built the first ~22, followed by Metalmast Marine with ~14 more). It was one of Tripp’s first fiberglass designs and helped pioneer the material for larger cruising/racing yachts.
